Yankees Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
A lost chance at a sweep and a rally that came far too late left the Yankees realizing any surge they mount over the final few weeks of the season is likely to fall short.
The Yankees lost to Tampa Bay 7-5 Thursday night, scoring all of their runs in the ninth and proving that when you mount a comeback too late it's destined to go for naught.
With 22 games to play, the Yankees are 7 1/2 behind wild-card leader Boston, which leaves them looking at their first postseason absence in 14 years.
There's little to do now but count down to the Yankee Stadium finale, which comes on Sept. 21. The Yankees also can begin watching the younger players develop.
And, of course, they can hope no one else gets injured.
Kazmir pitches Rays to win over; Angels win, too (AP)
Alex Rodriguez and the New York Yankees are struggling to get back into the playoff race while the Los Angeles Angels are closing in on another postseason berth. Scott Kazmir allowed one hit in six scoreless innings, and Tampa Bay's bullpen weathered ninth-inning home runs by Rodriguez and Derek Jeter to hang on for a 7-5 victory Thursday night.
Rays end two-game skid, beat Yankees 7-5 (AP)

Scott Kazmir did his part to get the Tampa Bay Rays back on track. The All-Star left-hander allowed one hit in six scoreless innings, and the Rays' bullpen weathered ninth-inning home runs by Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez to beat the Yankees 7-5 and avoid a three-game sweep on Thursday night. Willy Aybar homered and drove in three runs for the AL East leaders, who avoided a three-game sweep and...
Abreu scratched with sore left wrist (AP)
New York Yankees right fielder Bobby Abreu was removed from the starting lineup for Thursday night's game against Tampa Bay due to a sore left wrist. Abreu was hurt while sliding into second during a stolen base in the ninth inning of Wednesday's 8-4 victory over the Rays. X-rays were negatives, and the Yankees said Abreu is day to day.

Shea seats selling briskly at $869 a pair (AP)

As a season-ticket holder, Darrell Buono spent 13 years rooting for the New York Mets in blue, loge-level seats at Shea Stadium. So he bought them. The seats cost $869 for a pair and will have a place of honor in Buono's basement in New Hyde Park when they are shipped, sometime after the last game is played at Shea this fall and the Mets begin dismantling the stadium.
First use of instant replay backs onfield call (AP)

Alex Rodriguez figured that one of his prodigious home runs would provide the historic first test for major league baseball's week-old instant replay system. "There's probably 800 players in the big leagues. The odds of my being in some controversy are probably 2-to-1," the New York Yankees slugger said Wednesday night, after his ninth-inning homer against the Tampa Bay Rays was upheld in the first...
A-Rod homer upheld by instant replay (AP)

Alex Rodriguez made major league history by agreeing with an umpire. The New York Yankees third baseman, a lightning rod for headlines on and off the field throughout his career, saw his ninth-inning home run Wednesday night the same way as third base umpire Brian Runge. So did baseball's instant replay system.

To no one's surprise, New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez was the center of attention in Wednesday night's 8-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.
A Rod focused on wins and not milestones (AP)
Alex Rodriguez reached another milestone when he moved past Mike Schmidt into 12th place on the career home run list with 549. His focus, however, is on helping the New York Yankees get much-needed wins during a long shot run to make the playoffs. "It's hard to sit here and talk about anything personal," Rodriguez said before Wednesday's 8-4 victory over Tampa Bay.

A-Rod's 4 RBIs lift Yankees to 13-9 win vs. Tigers (AP)

What could have been a September showdown between the teams with the two biggest payrolls in baseball instead had very little impact on the pennant races. Thanks to a guy known as "Pudge," it wasn't devoid of emotion. Alex Rodriguez sparked a scoring barrage with a two-run single in the first inning and added an RBI in each of the next two frames to help the New York Yankees build a huge cushion...

K-Rod's closing on saves record (AP)

No longer a pitching prodigy, K-Rod still is putting up prodigious numbers. With 53 saves in 58 chances this year, the Los Angeles Angels' Francisco Rodriguez needs only four saves to match the major league single-season record set by Bobby Thigpen with the Chicago White Sox in 1990. And Rodriguez still has a month to do it.

The 2003 AL Cy Young Award winner, Halladay improved to 4-1 with a 2.50 ERA in five starts against the Yankees this season.
Toronto rallies for 7-6 win over Yankees (AP)

A landslide of little things have plagued the Yankees all season, and the Toronto Blue Jays took advantage of a couple more on Saturday. Vernon Wells hit a two-run homer, Gregg Zaun drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, and a key error by second baseman Robinson Cano helped the Blue Jays rally from four runs down for a 7-6 victory.

Pavano shuts down Jays, Yankees win 2-1 (AP)

Carl Pavano said he didn't hear the cheers when he walked off the mound after striking out Alex Rios, the years of fan animosity seemingly turned to adulation in just six short innings. He did hear Joe Girardi, though, when the Yankees manager made a request. "I asked for six innings and I got exactly what I asked for," Girardi said.
Yankees reveal pricing plans for new ballpark (AP)
Even seats behind the outfield fence will be costly at the new Yankee Stadium. The front part of the area behind the outfield in right and left will cost $100 and $75 per game next year as part of season-ticket plans at the $1.3 billion ballpark. But behind those four sections of seats, and to the rear of the bullpens closer to center field, are nine sections of bleachers priced at $12, the same as...

What started with Bambino ends with Giambino (AP)
What started with the Bambino ended with the Giambino. Until Jason Giambi crushed a home run in the seventh inning Thursday, it appeared all that was left for Yankee Stadium was its funeral. Now, after New York's 3-2 victory over the Red Sox in Boston's final trip to the ballpark, the Yankees cling to hope, perhaps deluding themselves from the inevitable conclusion that seemingly lies ahead.
Giambi comes off bench, saves Yanks against Boston (AP)

Two big swings by Jason Giambi invigorated the New York Yankees. Now, can they muster one more run at the playoffs? Giambi saved the Yankees on Thursday, coming off the bench to hit a tying homer in the seventh inning and a game-winning single in the ninth for a 3-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Desperate to get back in the pennant race, New York salvaged the finale of a three-game series and won...
