Sheffield's single gives Tigers 8-7 win over Cards (AP)

St. Louis Cardinals' Rick Ankiel rounds the bases after hitting a solo home run off of Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga in the first inning of a baseball game Wednesday, June 25, 2008 in Detroit. Ankiel hit two home runs in a 8-7 loss to the Tigers.

Gary Sheffield made a long wait worthwhile for the Detroit Tigers. Sheffield hit a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to give Detroit an 8-7 win against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night in a game that included a nearly 2 1/2 -hour rain delay. Sheffield, who came off the disabled list Tuesday and homered, and Carlos Guillen each had four hits for Detroit.

Tigers Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Dane Sardinha is a nice story that doesn't seem to be destined for a happy ending.

He's a quiet, soft-speaking guy who is polite and says all the right things.

Sardinha, one of three brothers who have been pretty much career minor leaguers, is regarded as a solid defensive catcher who calls a good game and has a very strong throwing arm.

But his bat, that's a different story. He struggles to hit even .200 in Triple-A.

He made a good impression this spring and he was Detroit's first choice to bring up when utility specialist Brandon Inge, the backup to catcher Ivan Rodriguez, was sidelined by a pulled oblique muscle.

Sardinha's first major league hit was a triple that drove in two runs and won a game for Detroit.

Now his mom and dad, who have...

Erik Bedard, Mariners shut down Tigers 4-1 (AP)

Seattle Mariners' Raul Ibanez rounds first base after hitting a home run in the fourth inning of an MLB baseball game against the Detroit Tigers in Seattle on Friday, July 4, 2008. Seattle defeated Detroit 4-1.

Standing out in the bullpen, Seattle reliever Sean Green noticed Erik Bedard's pitch count quickly getting closer to 100 and knew he needed to be ready, even if it was just the fifth inning. Bedard is earning a reputation for rarely throwing beyond 100 pitches. Fortunately for the Mariners, Green and Brandon Morrow were outstanding in finishing off what Bedard started.

Hollimon hits first homer in Tigers win (AP)

Detroit Tigers third baseman Carlos Guillen, left, throws to first on a grounder from Seattle Mariners' Yuniesky Betancourt in the eighth inning of a baseball game Thursday, July 3, 2008, in Seattle, as shortstop Michael Hollimon looks on. Betancourt was safe.

All through the minor leagues, Matt Joyce and Michael Hollimon could only dream of games like they had Thursday. The Detroit rookies, drafted the same year and teammates on three different minor league teams on the way through the organization, each played a big part in the Tigers' 8-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

Zumaya and Rodney heating up after shaky starts (AP)

Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Fernando Rodney reacts after the last out made by the Boston Red Sox in the ninth inning of their baseball game at Fenway Park in Boston Tuesday, May 15, 2007. Rodney along with teammate Joel Zumaya played a major part in Detroit's run-up to the 2006 World Series. Their injury-shortened seasons in 2007 led to the Tigers missing the playoffs. The comeback of the two relief pitchers in 2008 has coincided with the Tigers' recent turnaround.

After a slow start marred by injury, Joel Zumaya is starting to find his hard-throwing form for the Detroit Tigers. Zumaya reached 99 mph on the radar gun during a five-out stint in Monday's 5-4 win over the Minnesota Twins. It's a step in the right direction for the reliever who became one of the most popular Tigers.

Blackburn leads Twins over Tigers 7-0 (AP)

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland, center, leaves the mound after putting in relief pitcher Casey Fossum, right, to replace starter Eddie Bonine in third inning of a baseball game Wednesday, July 2, 2008, in Minneapolis. At left is catcher Dane Sardinha. The Twins won 7-0. Bonine gave up five runs--two of them earned--in 2 2-3 innings.

This is what it often looks like when the Minnesota Twins are winning: bunts, two-out singles and a whole lot of speed. Nick Blackburn combined with two relievers on a five-hitter, and Joe Mauer's two-run single with two outs sparked a five-run third inning that led the surging Twins over the Detroit Tigers, 7-0 Wednesday.

Tigers' Miner sent to Triple-A; Lopez recalled (AP)
Tigers reliever Zach Miner was optioned to Toledo on Wednesday and right-hander Aquilino Lopez was recalled from the Triple-A club. The move came after Miner gave up a career-high four walks in two innings during Detroit's 6-4 loss to the Twins on Tuesday night. Lopez started the season with the Tigers but was optioned to Toledo June 15 and had a 2.45 ERA in three games.

Monroe gets some revenge against his former team (AP)

Detroit Tigers' Marcus Thames (33) is greeted at the dugout after hitting two-run home run off Minnesota Twins' Scott Baker in the sixth inning of a baseball game, Tuesday, July 1, 2008 in Minneapolis.

Craig Monroe is growing into his new role as a reserve. Monroe hit a three-run homer and just missed a second, and Justin Morneau added three hits to help the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 6-4. Mike Redmond had two RBIs for Minnesota, which has won eight of 10 and 12 of its last 14. The Twins remain 2 1/2 games behind Chicago in the AL Central; Detroit is six back.

Twins, Tigers trade barbs about close pitches (AP)
It takes a lot to get the cucumber-cool Joe Mauer upset. Two pitches by Detroit's Armando Galarraga that had him jumping out of the way in Monday night's series opener would certainly qualify for that list. Mauer said after the game that he was convinced the third-inning pitches -- one behind him and another that made him lunge out of harm's way and give a long look to Galarraga and home plate...

Tigers rally in eighth to beat Twins (AP)

Detroit Tigers' Curtis Granderson drives in the go-ahead run with a single in eighth inning of a baseball game Monday, June 30, 2008, in Minneapolis. The Tigers came from behind to beat the Twins 5-4.

There was no way Joel Zumaya was going to disappoint Todd Jones and the rest of his teammates. Zumaya got five outs for his first save in more than a year, and Curtis Granderson's go-ahead RBI single capped Detroit's two-run eighth inning as the Tigers rallied to beat the Minnesota Twins 5-4 on Monday night.

Tigers' Cabrera leaves with hip flexor injury (AP)
Detroit first baseman Miguel Cabrera left the game against Minnesota on Monday night because of a tight left hip flexor. Cabrera hobbled a little after he reached to his left and dropped a low throw from third baseman Carlos Guillen in the second inning. He is listed as day-to-day. Clete Thomas pinch-hit for Cabrera in the third inning.

Tiger Stadium demolition gets under way (AP)

Demolition equipment stands outside Tiger Stadium in Detroit, Monday, June 30, 2008. Crews began the process of tearing down the baseball stadium Monday; most of the demolition work involved the removal of trash and other debris from the interior of the ballpark. An Aug. 1 deadline still stands for a nonprofit group seeking to raise enough money to save part of the stadium.

Crews began the process of tearing down historic Tiger Stadium on Monday. At least one hole was punched in the side of the stadium, which closed following the 1999 season. A back-hoe could be seen removing trash and other debris from the interior of the old ballpark. A handful of fans stopped by the site to watch the work.

Sardinha's 1st hit gives Tigers win over Rockies (AP)

Detroit Tigers' Marcus Thames, left, smiles at Edgar Renteria after they both scored on a triple by Dane Sardinha in the sixth inning of an interleague baseball game against the Colorado Rockies Sunday, June 29, 2008 in Detroit. The Tigers beat the Rockies, 4-3.

Dane Sardinha felt like a goat after grounding into a rally-killing double play. That made it all the better when his first major league hit made him a hero. Sardinha hit a two-run triple to rally the Tigers to a 4-3 win over the woeful Colorado Rockies on Sunday, giving Detroit a three-game sweep and a winning record for the first time this season.

Tigers' Ordonez on 15-day DL with pulled oblique (AP)
The Detroit Tigers placed right fielder Magglio Ordonez on the 15-day disabled list with a pulled muscle in his right side on Sunday. Ordonez pulled his oblique muscle in the third inning of a 7-6 win over the Colorado Rockies on Saturday night. Ordonez is hitting .307 with 12 home runs and 50 RBI. He hit .363 last season to win the American League batting title.

Cabrera hits 9th-inning double to lift Tigers (AP)

Colorado Rockies closer Brian Fuentes pitches against the Detroit Tigers in the ninth innng of an interleague baseball game Saturday, June 28, 2008 in Detroit. Fuentes took the loss, giving up a single, a walk and a double to Miguel Cabrera to blow his fourth save of the year. The Tigers beat the Rockies, 7-6.

The Detroit Tigers had a long, hard road to .500 this season, and the culmination didn't come easy Saturday night. Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run double in the bottom of the ninth and Detroit overcame Todd Jones' blown save to beat the Colorado Rockies 7-6. With their fourth straight win and 14th in 17 games, the Tigers improved to .500 for the first time this season.

Tigers' Magglio Ordonez leaves game with injury (AP)
Tigers right fielder Magglio Ordonez left the game Saturday night against the Colorado Rockies because of spasms in his side. Ordonez appeared to pull up as he went after Troy Tulowitzki's leadoff double off the right field wall in the top of the third. After he threw the ball back in, Detroit trainer Kevin Rand came out to Ordonez, talked to him for a minute and escorted him off the field.

Bonine impressive in Tigers' 7-1 win over Rockies (AP)

Detroit Tigers' Joel Zumaya pitches in the ninth inning against the Colorado Rockies in an interleague baseball game Friday, June 27, 2008 in Detroit. The Tigers beat the Rockies, 7-1.

The Detroit Tigers are close to the break-even point. Eddie Bonine limited Colorado to five hits over eight innings to lift Detroit to a 7-1 win over the Rockies on Friday night. Thomas' bases-loaded walk in 10th lifts Tigers (AP)

Detroit Tigers' Gary Sheffield, right, is congratulated by teammate Ivan Rodriguez, left, after hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the Interleague baseball game with the St. Louis Cardinals, Thursday, June 26, 2008, in Detroit. The Tigers defeated the Cardinals 3-2 in the 10th inning.

Albert Pujols' triumphant return was spoiled by a rookie. Clete Thomas drew a bases-loaded walk in the 10th inning to give the Detroit Tigers a 3-2 win Thursday over St. Louis, ruining Pujols' return from injury for the Cardinals. St. Louis reliever Mike Parisi (0-4) gave up a leadoff single to Curtis Granderson and intentionally walked Carlos Guillen and Miguel Cabrera before Thomas drew his second...

Flood washes away Negro League star's memories (AP)

This July 24, 1949 file photo shows Chicago Giants baseball player Art Pennington. His skin color cost Pennington a shot at the major leagues as a young man. He flourished instead in the Negro, Cuban, Mexican and Venezuelan leagues in the 1940s and, when baseball in America finally opened the door to blacks, in minor leagues across the country. Six decades later, the water came and carried off nearly every bit of proof that Pennington was the equal of just about anybody who played anywhere he went.

Baseball stole Art Pennington's future. The Cedar River washed away his past. His house, his car, his clothes, nearly all his pictures, even one of his two dogs -- it was all lost to the Midwest floods. "Every damn thing I had just floated down the river," he said. He is hardly alone: There are 10,000 or so others totaling up their losses just in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, perhaps 10 times as many across...
