Small-market AL clubs keep rolling (AP)
Move over, Yankees and Red Sox. Out of the way, White Sox. A couple of small-market clubs are showing the big boys how to play. Edwin Jackson took a two-hitter into the eighth inning and Carlos Pena homered and drove in five runs Friday night, helping the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays beat the Kansas City Royals 11-2 for their fifth straight victory.
Royals Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
Brian Bannister got roughed up. Again.
Bannister gave up seven runs, six earned, on eight hits in five innings in an 11-2 Royals loss Friday to the Rays. He walked one and struck out six, one shy of his season high.
"When they hit the ball, it didn't find any gloves," Bannister said. "It seemed like every ball they hit found a hole. We were playing the team with the best record in baseball."
Bannister said he had been working in-between starts on different things.
"I got a lot of swings and misses today," Bannister said. "I thought I made a lot of good pitches, but they're a confident offensive team now. We were playing the team with the best record in baseball. They jumped on me right away." The Rays scored three runs in the first, two on sacrifice...
Jackson's pitching, Pena's hitting pace Rays win (AP)

The Tampa Bay Rays surged to first place without the offensive production they're accustomed to getting from Carlos Pena. Now that he's back in the middle of the lineup, the AL East leaders are counting on him to help them stay on top. Pena homered for the first time in a month and drove in five runs Friday night, supporting a strong pitching performance by Edwin Jackson and pacing an 11-2 victory...
Seven-run 6th inning carries Royals past Orioles (AP)

Down by four runs and within 12 outs of another loss at Camden Yards, the Kansas City Royals put together the kind of inning that happens maybe once a year. Mark Grudzielanek went 4-for-5 and played a key role in a seven-run sixth that carried the Royals past the Baltimore Orioles 10-7 on Thursday night.
Royals promote J.J. Picollo to assistant GM (AP)

Cabrera goes distance, leads Orioles past Royals (AP)

Cabrera pitched a seven-hitter to earn his first victory since May 20, Aubrey Huff homered and the Baltimore Orioles beat Gil Meche and the Royals 5-2 Wednesday night.
Orioles end run of tough losses with win over KC (AP)

George Sherrill would have been happy with a night off. The Baltimore Orioles closer had blown two straight save opportunities by yielding late-inning home runs, yet circumstances called for the left-hander to hold on to a ninth-inning lead against the Kansas City Royals. Fortunately, Sherrill had plenty of margin for error.

We don't grade on a curve, and that's why only the Rays get an A-plus while three teams are given Fs.
Olivo homer in 9th helps Royals rally past Orioles (AP)

The scouting report said Miguel Olivo has difficulty hitting breaking balls, so George Sherrill tried to seal a victory for the Baltimore Orioles by throwing a slider with two outs in the ninth inning. The strategy was sound. The pitch was not. Again. Olivo homered on an 0-2 pitch to force extra innings, and Jose Guillen singled in the tiebreaking run in the 11th to give Kansas City a 6-5 comeback...

Streaky Royals are hard for fans to figure (AP)
They opened the season by sweeping the Tigers in Detroit and long-suffering fans sat slack-jawed, wondering if the Kansas City Royals finally had turned the corner. But the first half of the season was a roller coaster ride for the Royals faithful: a seven-game losing streak, a five-game win streak, a 12-game losing streak, then an 11-1 stretch that included a three-game sweep of the Cardinals at...
LaRue drives in four runs in St. Louis win over KC (AP)

The sun, the wind, and Jason LaRue's stocky body proved too much for Kansas City to overcome. The backup catcher started his day by holding onto the ball in the first inning when David DeJesus came crashing into him trying to score. DeJesus, leading the majors with a .463 average with runners in scoring position, had to leave the game.

Royals beat Cardinals for sixth straight win (AP)

So how can the same bunch of guys who lose 12 in a row in May turn around and win 11 of 12 in June? Simple. "We weren't hitting and we weren't pitching at the same time," said right-hander Gil Meche, who went seven strong innings Friday night in a 7-2 victory over St. Louis. "Both parts of our game went downhill.

"There's still some guys still playing that I grew up watching," Hochevar said.
