Reds Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Manager Dusty Baker hopes Chris Dickerson isn't infected with what he calls home run-itis after hitting six home runs in his first 20 major league games. Dickerson has no minor league track record of being a power hitter.

Baker hopes the 425-foot home run Dickerson hit the opposite way Wednesday against the Pirates shows him he doesn't have to muscle up and pull.

"I remember him having some pop in spring training," said Baker. "It is a matter of learning to channel and control that pop versus seeing him surprisingly pop one.

"His focus and concentration must be better to not foul off or miss pitches too much. I just don't want him to get pop-conscious. The one he hit so hard to the opposite field shows he doesn't have to be pop-conscious.

Votto's homer, single rally Reds over Pirates 8-6 (AP)

Cincinnati Reds' Joey Votto hits a single off Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher T.J. Beam to drive in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning of a baseball game, Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, in Cincinnati. Cincinnati won 8-6.

At this point in another dismal season, the Cincinnati Reds are looking for any reason to feel a little better about themselves. How about this: At least they're not in last place. Joey Votto hit a solo homer and a tiebreaking, bases-loaded single in the eighth inning Thursday, completing the Reds' rally from a five-run deficit to an 8-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates, who got to stay all by...

RH Josh Fogg leaves game with strained groin (AP)
Reds right-hander Josh Fogg left after three innings Thursday because he strained his groin while scoring on a sacrifice fly. Fogg gave up five runs against Pittsburgh, his latest poor start, then left after tagging up from third base on Jeff Keppinger's fly to center field. The Reds trailed 5-2 at the time.

LaRoche ends slump in Pirates 6-5 win over Reds (AP)

A passed ball gets by Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Ryan Doumit, right, allowing a run to score in the fourth inning of a baseball game against the Cincinnati Reds, Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, in Cincinnati. Reds' Corey Patterson, left, looks on. Pittsburgh won the game 6-5.

Adam LaRoche didn't need much to snap his slump. The Pittsburgh first baseman was hitless in 16 straight at bats before coming up with a pair of soft RBI singles to lead the Pirates to a 6-5 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night. "I wasn't aware that I was 0-for-16," LaRoche said. "I've been 0-for-16 before, but I had no idea.

Cincinnati Reds 2008 review and look ahead (PA SportsTicker)
The Cincinnati Reds, who hovered around .500 for much of the first four months this season, entered into eternal rest (well, for 2008 at least) on August 10, concluding a 16-game stretch in which they went just 2-14 to drop to 52-67.

Back-to-back homers by rookies help Pirates win (AP)

Pittsburgh Pirates' Brandon Moss rounds the bases past Cincinnati Reds shortstop Jeff Keppinger, right, after Moss hit a solo home run in the second inning of a baseball game against the Cincinnati Reds, Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, in Cincinnati. The Pirates won 3-2.

It's too early to say if Pittsburgh's three-way deal at the trade deadline is paying off, but the Pirates can dream, can't they? Rookies Brandon Moss and Andy LaRoche, two of the players acquired by Pittsburgh in a six-player deal on July 31, hit back-to-back home runs to help the last-place Pirates snap a 10-game losing streak with a 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night.

The relief pitcher was 4-1 with a 2.23 ERA in 43 games before the injury.

Cincinnati Reds' Joey Votto watches his three-run double off San Francisco Giants pitcher Jack Taschner in the seventh inning during a baseball game, Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, in Cincinnati. The Reds won 9-3.

Bronson Arroyo did it all Sunday. And Joey Votto helped a lot, too. Arroyo was impressive on the mound, at the plate and on the basepaths, Votto went 4-for-4 with four RBIs, and the Cincinnati Reds beat San Francisco 9-3 to complete their first three-game sweep of the Giants at home in 14 years. "It was a big day for him and a complete series for us," manager Dusty Baker said, praising Arroyo's...

Reds option RHP Ramirez, recall C-IF-OF Castillo (AP)
The Cincinnati Reds optioned right-hander Ramon Ramirez to Single-A Sarasota on Sunday, less than a day after he been called up and made his major league debut with seven effective innings against San Francisco. The Reds recalled utility player Wilkin Castillo from Triple-A Louisville. The 25-year-old Ramirez allowed five hits and three runs with two walks and six strikeouts in Cincinnati's 7-6 win...

Patterson's triple gives Reds 7-6 win over Giants (AP)

Cincinnati Reds' Corey Patterson hits a triple off San Francisco pitcher Jack Taschner scoring Jay Bruce in the eighth inning during a baseball game, Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, in Cincinnati. The Reds won 7-6.

Jack Taschner had trouble with his location at the worst time for the San Francisco Giants. Corey Patterson tripled in the go-ahead run off the left-hander in the eighth inning and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Giants 7-6 on Saturday night after blowing a three-run lead. Tyler Walker got the first out of the eighth before San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy brought in Taschner (3-2) to face Jay Bruce...

Encarnacion's slam leads Reds over Giants 11-7 (AP)

San Francisco Giants starter Barry Zito leaves the field in the fourth inning of a baseball game against the Cincinnati Reds, Friday, Aug. 29, 2008, in Cincinnati. Zito had just been taken out of the game by manager Bruce Bochy after Zito hit Reds' Joey Votto with a pitch.

The second number in Barry Zito's record keeps getting unbelievably bigger. Edwin Encarnacion hit his second career grand slam off Zito, and Chris Dickerson homered and drove in four runs Friday night, leading the Cincinnati Reds to an 11-7 victory over the San Francisco Giants. The Reds' best offensive showing since they traded Ken Griffey Jr.

Cincinnati Reds' Brandon Phillips, right, scores from first base on a Jay Bruce triple in the seventh inning behind Houston Astros catcher Humberto Quintero in the seventh inning of a baseball game Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, in Houston. The Astros won 3-2.

Brandon Backe thinks he's figured out why he's pitched so badly at times this month. Backe was sharp into the seventh, Ty Wigginton homered twice off Aaron Harang and the Houston Astros beat the Cincinnati Reds 3-2 on Thursday. Humberto Quintero added a solo shot to help the Astros beat the Reds for the 10th time in 12 meetings this season.

Oswalt beats Reds again, Astros win 4-1 (AP)

Houston Astros' Hunter Pence heads to first base on a single in the sixth inning against the Cincinnati Reds in a baseball game Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008 in Houston. Pence had a home run as the Astros won 4-1.

The Cincinnati Reds' lineup may have changed, but Roy Oswalt's success against it has not. The Houston ace limited the Reds to five hits in seven innings in the Astros' 4-1 victory Wednesday night. Hunter Pence and Ty Wigginton hit two-run homers to help Oswalt beat Cincinnati for the 22nd time in 23 decisions.

Arroyo, Hanigan lead Reds to 2-1 win over Astros (AP)

Houston Astros manager Cecil Cooper argues with second base umpire Doug Eddings about an eighth-inning solo home run by Cincinnati Reds' Ryan Hanigan in a baseball game Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008 in Houston. The Reds won 2-1.

Ryan Hanigan wanted to make sure baseball's instant replay system wouldn't start for a few more days. Hanigan hit a solo homer that would have probably drawn a review in a few days and Bronson Arroyo pitched Cincinnati's first complete game of the season in the Reds' 2-1 win over the Houston Astros. Hanigan broke the tie in the eighth with a one-out homer off Geoff Geary that bounced off the facade...

Colorado Rockies' Omar Quintanilla follows the flight of his solo home run off Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Mike Lincoln in the 12th inning to give the Rockies a 4-3 victory in a baseball game in Denver on Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008.

In a game that featured nearly everything, Omar Quintanilla finally gave it an ending. Quintanilla homered with one out in the 12th inning and the Colorado Rockies took advantage of five Cincinnati errors to beat the Reds 4-3 on Sunday. "We had a balk, a wild pitch, a homer, errant throws, walk-off home run," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said.

Colorado Rockies relief pitcher Brian Fuentes reacts after getting Cincinnati Reds' Jeff Keppinger for the final out in the ninth inning of the Rockies' 7-6 victory in a baseball game in Denver on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008. Fuentes earned his 25th save of the season.

The Rockies trailed 5-3 when Holliday hit reliever Nick Masset's first pitch off the right-field wall.

"He was dealing tonight," Reds manager Dusty Baker said.
