Pirates Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

The Pirates have had a chance to see what the future might look like at shortstop this week, as Jack Wilson has missed three consecutive games with a bruised right index finger.

Wilson, who has the longest continuous service with the Pirates, having made his major league debut with them in 2001, is a top candidate to get traded in the offseason. The Pirates are looking to get younger and feel they can deal a proven standout defensive shortstop like Wilson and get a couple of top prospects in return.

If Wilson is indeed traded, the top in-house candidates to replace him are infielders Brian Bixler and Luis Cruz, who were both called up from Class AAA Indianapolis on Tuesday after the International League season ended.

Cruz started two games of a three-game series...

Votto's homer, single rally Reds over Pirates 8-6 (AP)

Cincinnati Reds' Joey Votto hits a single off Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher T.J. Beam to drive in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning of a baseball game, Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, in Cincinnati. Cincinnati won 8-6.

At this point in another dismal season, the Cincinnati Reds are looking for any reason to feel a little better about themselves. How about this: At least they're not in last place. Joey Votto hit a solo homer and a tiebreaking, bases-loaded single in the eighth inning Thursday, completing the Reds' rally from a five-run deficit to an 8-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates, who got to stay all by...

LaRoche ends slump in Pirates 6-5 win over Reds (AP)

A passed ball gets by Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Ryan Doumit, right, allowing a run to score in the fourth inning of a baseball game against the Cincinnati Reds, Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, in Cincinnati. Reds' Corey Patterson, left, looks on. Pittsburgh won the game 6-5.

Adam LaRoche didn't need much to snap his slump. The Pittsburgh first baseman was hitless in 16 straight at bats before coming up with a pair of soft RBI singles to lead the Pirates to a 6-5 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night. "I wasn't aware that I was 0-for-16," LaRoche said. "I've been 0-for-16 before, but I had no idea.

Back-to-back homers by rookies help Pirates win (AP)

Pittsburgh Pirates' Brandon Moss rounds the bases past Cincinnati Reds shortstop Jeff Keppinger, right, after Moss hit a solo home run in the second inning of a baseball game against the Cincinnati Reds, Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, in Cincinnati. The Pirates won 3-2.

It's too early to say if Pittsburgh's three-way deal at the trade deadline is paying off, but the Pirates can dream, can't they? Rookies Brandon Moss and Andy LaRoche, two of the players acquired by Pittsburgh in a six-player deal on July 31, hit back-to-back home runs to help the last-place Pirates snap a 10-game losing streak with a 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night.

Ross Ohlendorf was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis by Pittsburgh and was scheduled to make his Pirates debut as the starting pitcher in Wednesday night's game at Cincinnati. Ohlendorf, acquired from the New York Yankees on July 25, was 4-3 with a 3.47 ERA in seven Triple-A starts for the Pirates.

Pirates GM unhappy with losing streak (AP)
General manager Neal Huntington told the talent-stripped Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday that they can't coast through the rest of the season despite being without their two top offensive players -- and "every game" in September is an audition for 2009. The Pirates' 7-0 loss Sunday to Milwaukee -- in which they were held to one hit -- was their 10th in a row, their longest losing streak since they...

Sabathia throws 1-hitter in Brewers' 7-0 win (AP)

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher CC Sabathia (52) celebrates with catcher Jason Kendall after throwing a complete game one-hitter against the Pittsburgh Pirates in a baseball game in Pittsburgh Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008. The Brewers won 7-0.

To the Milwaukee Brewers, CC Sabathia pitched a no-hitter. The official scorer disagreed. The Brewers are going to try to change his mind. Sabathia limited the Pirates to Andy LaRoche's infield single leading off the fifth inning, on a play Milwaukee manager Ned Yost argued was an error on the pitcher, and the Brewers beat Pittsburgh 7-0 Sunday for their eighth victory in nine games.

Brewers send Pirates to ninth straight loss, 11-3 (AP)

Milwaukee Brewers outfielders Ryan Braun (8), Mike Cameron, center, and Corey Hart (1) celebrate a 11-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates in a baseball game in Pittsburgh Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008. Cameron and Hart both hit home runs in the game.

Jeff Suppan thinks his winning streak has as much to do with the Brewers' recent success as it does his own mastery of opponents. Suppan won his fifth consecutive decision, Corey Hart and Mike Cameron homered, and the Milwaukee Brewers handed the Pittsburgh Pirates their ninth straight loss, 11-3 Saturday night.

Braun's home run powers Brewers past Pirates, 3-1 (AP)

Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Freddy Sanchez, left, waits for the late throw from center field as Milwaukee Brewers' Ryan Braun (8) slides into second with an eighth-inning double in a baseball game in Pittsburgh on Friday, Aug. 29, 2008. The Brewers won 3-1.

Milwaukee put its first two runners on base Friday night, and that brought up the perfect hitter to face Tom Gorzelanny. Ryan Braun continued his success against the left-hander by hitting a three-run home run, and the Brewers handed the Pittsburgh Pirates their eighth straight loss with a 3-1 win. Dave Bush (9-9) allowed one run in 6 2-3 innings for Milwaukee, which increased its lead in the NL...

No. 2 pick Alvarez claims Pirates deal not valid (AP)

In this April 26, 2008 file photo provided by Vanderbilt University, Vanderbilt's Pedro Alvarez watches a hit against Kentucky in Nashville, Tenn. Alvarez, the No. 2 pick in June amateur draft, was placed on Major League Baseball's restricted list Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008 after his agent claimed the contract Alvarez agreed to with the Pittsburgh Pirates minutes before the Aug. 15 signing deadline is not valid.

No. 2 draft pick Pedro Alvarez refused to sign his contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the players' association filed a grievance Wednesday claiming the Aug. 15 deadline was unilaterally extended by Major League Baseball without the union's permission. The Pirates announced early on Aug. 16 that Alvarez, a power-hitting third baseman from Vanderbilt, agreed to a minor league contract with a $6...

Cubs sweep Pirates behind Marquis (AP)

Chicago Cubs' Reed Johnson, left, scores on a ground out to Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Andy LaRoche (15) by Cubs' Ronny Cedeno in the seventh inning of a baseball game at Pittsburgh Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008. The Cubs won 2-0.

Two bunts, one double and nine well-pitched innings. The Chicago Cubs proved on a Wrigley Field-like day they can win when their bats aren't booming, and their by-the-textbook victory came before they begin what may be their toughest stretch all season. Jason Marquis shut down Pittsburgh's batters on a cool, windy day that must have made the Cubs feel at home, and Chicago turned two well-placed...

Pirates' Hansen optioned, Chavez called up (AP)
Right-hander Craig Hansen, struggling with his control since being traded to Pittsburgh last month, was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday. The Pirates picked up the contract of right-hander Jesse Chavez from their top farm club. Hansen, obtained from Boston in the three-team trade that sent outfielder Jason Bay to the Red Sox on July 31, was 0-2 with a 8.10 ERA in nine games with...

Cubs beat Pirates with 7-run 8th, 7 Soto RBIs (AP)

Chicago Cubs' Geovany Soto rounds the bases past Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Freddy Sanchez after hitting a solo homer in the sixth inning of a baseball game in Pittsburgh, Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008. The Cubs won 14-9.

Alfonso Soriano dropped a routine fly ball in Pittsburgh for the second time in four months, giving the Chicago Cubs flashbacks. The team with the majors' best record need not have worried. Geovany Soto still had another at-bat to go. Soto drove in seven runs and his second three-run double of the game keyed a seven-run eighth inning, helping the Cubs rally for a 14-9 victory over the Pirates on...

Ramirez, Fukudome with 4 RBIs each in Cubs' romp (AP)

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Ted Lilly throws against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the fifth inning of the baseball game in Pittsburgh, Monday, Aug. 25, 2008. The Cubs won 12-3.

A day after cautioning his team that this is no time to sit around, Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella got plenty of production up and down his lineup. What he liked most was that much of it came from his new prize pupil, Kosuke Fukudome. Aramis Ramirez homered and drove in three runs and the Cubs improved baseball's best record by again beating the team they torment the most, defeating the...

Hardy hits winner to lift Brewers over Pirates in 12 (AP)

Milwaukee Brewers' Mike Cameron, right, celebrates his home run with Bill Hall, left, against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the eigth inning of a baseball game Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008, in Milwaukee. Cameron was 5-for-5 in the Brewers' 4-3 win.

J.J. Hardy's patience was wearing thin in extra innings, but he waited -- exactly one more pitch. Hardy drove in the winning run on his bobblehead day at Miller Park, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat Pittsburgh 4-3 in 12 innings on Sunday for their 12th straight home win over the Pirates. "It's just a coincidence that it's bobble day for me that it happened, but it's nice to have that many fans out...

Pirates manager Russell, 1B LaRoche ejected (AP)
Pirates manager John Russell and first baseman Adam LaRoche were ejected before the sixth inning of Sunday's 4-3, 12-inning loss to the Milwaukee Brewers for arguing balls and strikes. Pittsburgh led 1-0 when LaRoche was ejected by plate umpire Bob Davidson, a half-inning after he was upset at a called third strike that ended a Pirates rally.

Braun, Suppan lead Brewers to 3rd straight win (AP)

Milwaukee Brewers manager Ned Yost, left, argues with home plate umpire Andy Fletcher after a fan interference call in the sixth inning of a baseball game against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008, in Milwaukee.

Able to wave the bat free and easy, Ryan Braun got right into the swing. Hampered lately by a tight back, Braun homered, doubled and drove in three runs as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-3 Saturday night for their third straight victory. The All-Star slugger had missed nine of the previous 12 games with an intercostal strain -- he described the pain as muscles tightening on...

Cameron, Hardy homer, Brewers beat Pirates (AP)

Milwaukee Brewers' Mike Cameron smiles in the dugout after hitting a two run home run against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the seventh inning of a baseball game Friday, Aug. 22, 2008, in Milwaukee.

Dave Bush seems to always struggle in the opening innings. Good thing a run or two doesn't matter to these Brewers. Bush rebounded from another slow start to toss seven solid innings, then watched Mike Cameron homer to cap a six-run seventh as Milwaukee rallied to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-4 on Friday night.

Pirates C Doumit leaves game with flu-like symptoms (PA SportsTicker)
