Mets Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
The Mets already have won the season series from the Phillies with a 10-5 head-to-head record. Now, they can create some distance between the teams in the division standings. As the National League East rivals open their final series of the season Friday at Shea Stadium, the Mets hold a season-high three-game division lead.
The marquee matchup comes Sunday night on national TV, when Johan Santana opposes fellow ace Cole Hamels. The Phillies skipped Kyle Kendrick on Sunday to get Hamels into the series on standard rest.
"They're right behind us, and this is a chance to make some separation," said Mike Pelfrey, who opposes Brett Myers in Friday's opener.
Fresh in everyone's minds will be last year's historic collapse.

Will Venable hit his first career homer and the San Diego Padres beat Milwaukee 5-2 on Thursday night, handing the slumping Brewers their fourth straight loss. Nick Hundley and Luis Rodriguez each drove in two runs for San Diego, which had lost nine straight on the road and is tied with Washington and Seattle for the fewest wins in the majors.

As a season-ticket holder, Darrell Buono spent 13 years rooting for the New York Mets in blue, loge-level seats at Shea Stadium. So he bought them. The seats cost $869 for a pair and will have a place of honor in Buono's basement in New Hyde Park when they are shipped, sometime after the last game is played at Shea this fall and the Mets begin dismantling the stadium.

Church's slam helps Mets win 9-2, sweep Brewers (AP)

Carlos Delgado had his fun ribbing Ryan Church about his lack of power production. But after two stints on the disabled list with post-concussion syndrome, Church finally had some fun of his own. Church hit a grand slam, his first home run since June 1, and Brian Schneider added a homer in a six-run first inning that provided all the offense the Mets needed to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 9-2 and...

Big effort from bullpen leads Mets past Brewers (AP)

Now that major league rosters have expanded, the New York Mets have a bunch of new arms in their suspect bullpen. It appears they plan to use 'em, too. Carlos Beltran hit a three-run homer, Endy Chavez drove in the decisive run in the 10th inning and New York beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-5 Tuesday night thanks to a stellar effort from its much-maligned bullpen.

Delgado's late homer gives Mets the win (AP)

The shadows in late afternoon at Miller Park can be brutal to hitters, but Carlos Delgado made good contact anyway. Delgado's two-run homer off Eric Gagne in the eighth inning propelled the New York Mets to a 4-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday. "Probably the worst shadows that I've been involved with since I've been in professional baseball, but it goes the same way for both teams,"...

Aaron Heilman issued a bases-loaded walk to Josh Willingham in the ninth inning as the sputtering New York Mets' bullpen failed again in a 4-3 loss to the Florida Marlins on Saturday night. Mike Pelfrey worked 6 2-3 solid innings before handing a 3-2 lead to the bullpen, which has blown 11 of 26 save opportunities since the All-Star break and is second in the NL with 24 blown saves overall.

The New York Mets and Florida Marlins poured onto the field in the second inning Saturday after Mike Pelfrey hit Florida's Cody Ross on the arm with a pitch.
