Mariners Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

If all goes according to plan, the New York Yankees will see a somewhat different Brandon Morrow than has been seen in the big leagues to this point.

Morrow, a right-hander, is back with the Mariners after having been sent down to Class AAA Tacoma to stretch out his arm and become a starter rather than a short reliever. When he went down, Morrow led the club with 10 saves.

At the time, there were no plans to fiddle with the pitches he throws, but in the past month Morrow has added a curve that he hopes will develop into another weapon to go along with his 98 mph fastball and 86 mph slider.

Morrow gets the first start of his big-league career Friday against the Yankees, and the Mariners as well as the visitors will be getting their first real look at the curve,...

Nippert pitches Rangers to win over Seattle (AP)

Seattle Mariners shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt, right, throws to first base to turn the double play on a ball hit by Texas Rangers' Hank Blalock as Texas Rangers' Milton Bradley slides into second base during the eighth inning of a baseball game, Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, in Arlington, Texas.

Texas fill-in starter Dustin Nippert got to be part of a few rarities Wednesday. Nippert pitched seven innings to win as a starter for the first time in nearly three years, and the Rangers beat the Seattle Mariners for only their third 1-0 victory in 15 seasons at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Considering that Texas starters entered with the majors' second-highest ERA (5.33), and that Nippert had...

McCarthy, Hamilton lead Rangers past Mariners (AP)

Texas Rangers left fielder Marlon Byrd misses the catch on a hit off the wall by Seattle Mariners' Jose Lopez for an RBI double in the eighth inning of a baseball game, Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, in Arlington, Texas.

Brandon McCarthy gave the Texas Rangers what they hope is a preview for 2009. McCarthy pitched six strong innings for his first win in more than 13 months, Josh Hamilton drove in three runs and the Rangers beat the Seattle Mariners 6-4 on Tuesday night. McCarthy (1-0) allowed two runs and four hits in his third start of the season.

Mariners call up 5; Morrow to start Friday night (AP)
The Mariners added five players to their expanded roster from Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday, with right-hander Brandon Morrow scheduled to start Friday night against the New York Yankees in place of injured lefty Jarrod Washburn. Mariners manager Jim Riggleman said Washburn will miss at least one start due to a strained abdominal muscle.

Mariners 3B Beltre hits for cycle (PA SportsTicker)
Seattle Mariners third baseman Adrian Beltre recorded the second cycle of the day on Monday and the fifth of the season by accomplishing the feat against the Texas Rangers.

Beltre hits for cycle in Seattle's 12-6 win (AP)

Seattle Mariners' Adrian Beltre, right, talks with shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt in the dugout in the eighth inning against the Texas Rangers in a baseball game Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, in Arlington, Texas. Beltre hit for the cycle and had five hits as the Mariners won 12-6.

The toughest part of Adrian Beltre's day came when he entered the Seattle clubhouse. The Mariners third baseman received a congratulatory beer shower after hitting for the cycle against the Texas Rangers in a 12-6 victory Monday night. "I'm still shaking," Beltre said. "I don't like that feeling. But I'll take it.

Seattle's Adrian Beltre hits for cycle (AP)
Mariners third baseman Adrian Beltre joined Stephen Drew of the Diamondbacks in hitting for the cycle on Monday. It was the first time two players hit for the cycle on the same day since Sept. 17, 1920, when Bobby Veach of the Detroit Tigers and George Burns of the New York Giants did it, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Mariners activate Silva, call up 2 from Tacoma (AP)
The Seattle Mariners activated pitcher Carlos Silva from the 15-day disabled list to start Monday night against the Texas Rangers. The right-hander, out since Aug. 16 with right elbow tendinitis, made his last start on Aug. 15 at Minnesota, allowing nine runs in 3 1-3 innings. With teams allowed to expand their rosters to 40, the Mariners also brought up left-hander Justin Thomas and infielder Luis...

Beltre's 2 homers help Mariners beat Indians (AP)

Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Cliff Lee watches from the dugout during their 6-4 loss to the Seattle Mariners in a baseball game Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, in Cleveland. Lee goes for his 20th win of the season against the Chicago White Sox on Monday.

Adrian Beltre helped the Seattle Mariners build a lead that was just big enough for its revitalized bullpen. Beltre homered twice, Roy Corcoran completed a shaky ninth inning for his second save and Seattle beat the Cleveland Indians 6-4 Sunday to complete a three-game sweep. Beltre's third multihomer game of the season and 19th of his career helped Seattle win for the seventh time in nine games.

Ibanez, Mariners beat Indians 4-3 in 10 innings (AP)

Cleveland Indians manager Eric Wedge, center, argues third base umpire Fieldin Culbreth, right, and with second base umpire Gary Cederstrom in the tenth inning in a baseball game, Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, in Cleveland. Wedge was ejected. The Seattle Mariners won 4-3.

If it's August, watch out for Raul Ibanez. Ibanez upped his average for the month to .398 by singling in the go-ahead run to spark Seattle's two-run 10th inning, giving the Mariners a 4-3 win over the Cleveland Indians on Saturday. "It feels good anytime you can help the team win," Ibanez said. "We've been battling.

Mariners edge Indians 3-2 (AP)

Seattle Mariners pitcher J.J. Putz reacts after the final out and the Mariners defeated the Cleveland Indians 3-2 in a baseball game, Friday, Aug. 29, 2008, in Cleveland.

For nearly two weeks, the Cleveland Indians strung together timely hits, quality starts and win after win after win, racking up 10 straight. And then they ran into the Seattle Mariners. Of all teams. Felix Hernandez stopped baseball's hottest team, Raul Ibanez homered and drove in three runs and the lowly Mariners -- the AL's worst team -- beat Cleveland 3-2 on Friday night, ending the Indians'...

Minnesota rallies, holds on to beat Seattle 6-5 (AP)

Seattle Mariners pitcher Sean Green receives a pat from catcher Kenji Johjima, right, after giving up a run to the Minnesota Twins during the eighth inning of a baseball game in Seattle on Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008. At left is Adrian Beltre. The Twins won 6-5.

Knowing how many steps must happen in perfect order to throw out a runner from the outfield, Minnesota's Denard Span wasn't the least bit surprised to see Tug Hulett being sent toward home. Fortunately for the slumping Twins, Span was perfect. "I can see why so many third-base coaches send runners," Span said.

Mariners stun Twins again with 3-2 victory (AP)

Seattle Mariners closer Roy Corcoran celebrates a 3-2 win over the Minnesota Twins in Seattle on Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008.

That Minnesota Twins' joyride that landed them in the thick of a pennant race is starting to grind -- just when it needs to soar. Seattle's Jose Lopez drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning and Roy Corcoran got his first career save in the Mariners' 3-2 victory Tuesday night, the Twins' fourth consecutive loss.

Twins blow chance to move into 1st-place tie (AP)

Minnesota Twins batter Justin Morneau lines out in top of the 10th inning of an MLB baseball game against the Seattle Mariners, Monday, Aug. 25, 2008, at Safeco Field in Seattle. The Mariners won the game 4-2.

What's this, celebrating and suds in ... Seattle? Adrian Beltre homered in the bottom of the 11th inning, got a thorough pounding at home plate by his victory-starved teammates and then a beer shower after the Seattle Mariners kept the Minnesota Twins out of first place in the AL Central with a 4-2 win on Monday night.

Mariners option RHP Lowe to minors (PA SportsTicker)
The Seattle Mariners optioned righthander Mark Lowe to Class AAA Tacoma of the Pacific Coast League on Monday.

Hernandez helps Mariners to win over Athletics (AP)

Oakland Athletics' third base coach Tye Young, left, greets Jack Hannahan after he hit a solo home run against the Seattle Mariners in the first inning of baseball game in Seattle on Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008.

For a team that has struggled to win even with its starters on the field, it just figures that two bench players would lead the Mariners to a victory. Kenji Johjima and Miguel Cairo went a combined 5-for-6 at the plate and scored four runs, helping Seattle to an 8-4 victory and a split of a four-game series with the Oakland Athletics on Sunday.

Eveland makes smooth return to A's (AP)

Seattle Mariners shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt, right, leaps to avoid the slide of Oakland Athletics' Daric Barton in the eight inning of a baseball game in Seattle on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008. The Athletics beat the Mariners 5-1.

Dana Eveland came back from Triple-A with different mechanics, and a different result. Eveland made a smooth return to the majors, pitching shutout ball into the seventh inning and helping the Oakland Athletics defeat the Seattle Mariners 5-1 Saturday night. "You've got to give some credit to Sacramento," A's manager Bob Geren said.

Clements' 2 doubles lead Mariners over Athletics (AP)

Seattle Mariners' Ichiro Suzuki, of Japan, hits a single in the third inning against the Oakland Athletics during a baseball game in Seattle on Friday, Aug. 22, 2008. Seattle won 7-5.

For all that went right for Seattle closer J.J. Putz last season, about the same has gone wrong for him this year. Putz, the 2007 Rolaids Relief Man Award winner in the American League, was relieved to earn his first save since June 9 in the Mariners' 7-5 victory over the Oakland Athletics. But even that was a struggle as he allowed two baserunners before inducing a game-ending double play.
