Cubs Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Left fielder Reed Johnson led off for the second straight game Friday, and manager Lou Piniella said the experiment to bat right fielder Kosuke Fukudome first is all but over.

Piniella reasons that when left fielder Alfonso Soriano comes off the disabled list after his broken left hand heals, he'll bat first.

At that time, Piniella plans to bat Fukudome second, at least to begin. So why not get him used to it now?

"There's no sense in leading him (Fukudome) off, and Soriano comes in, and all of a sudden he's in the 2-hole," Piniella said. "So we'll put him in the 2-hole now and let him acclimate himself."

Fukudome opened the season as the Cubs' No. 5 hitter. He may yet end up back there, but Piniella said as far back as last winter that the patient hitter...

Zambrano leads Cubs to 2-1 win over Cardinals (AP)

St. Louis Cardinals' Troy Glaus yells back at home plate umpire Ted Barrett after being called out on strikes during the ninth inning of a baseball game Friday, July 4, 2008, in St. Louis. The Cubs won 2-1.

The return of Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano trumped the soap opera setting of Jim Edmonds' homecoming and Albert Pujols' 300th home run. Zambrano came off the 15-day disabled list from a shoulder strain with six spotless innings Friday night, leading Chicago to a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the opener of a three-game series matching the National League's top two teams.

Carlos Zambrano back for Cubs against Cards (AP)
The Chicago Cubs activated pitcher Carlos Zambrano from the 15-day disabled list in time to start Friday night against the St. Louis Cardinals. The right-handed pitcher left his start on June 18 against Tampa Bay because of pain in his right shoulder. Tests showed a minor strain. Zambrano took the loss in that game, allowing five runs -- four earned -- in 6 2-3 innings.

Lincecum, Aurilia lift Giants over Cubs (AP)

San Francisco Giants catcher Bengie Molina, left, congratulates reliever Osiris Matos after Matos pitched a scoreless ninth inning in his major league debut against the Chicago Cubs in a baseball game in San Francisco, Thursday, July 3, 2008. San Francisco won 8-3.

Tim Lincecum the cover boy soon could be Tim Lincecum the All-Star starter -- or at least All-Star. And in his second big league season no less. Lincecum increased his National League-leading strikeout total to 122 with eight Ks in six innings and also singled in a run and scored from first, helping the San Francisco Giants salvage a four-game split with an 8-3 win over the Chicago Cubs on...

Cubs bring back OF Johnson from DL (AP)
The Chicago Cubs activated outfielder Reed Johnson from the disabled list Thursday, and he was in the starting lineup batting leadoff and playing left field for the finale of a four-game series against the Giants. Johnson had been sidelined since June 24, retroactive to June 18, with lower back spasms.

Righetti still reminded of no-hitter 25 years ago (AP)
Rarely does a day go by that Dave Righetti doesn't hear something about the no-hitter he pitched 25 years ago. His gem became history-making for so many reasons. It was Yankees-Red Sox. New York hadn't had a no-hitter in nearly three decades. It happened on the Fourth of July and owner George Steinbrenner's birthday to boot.

Fontenot's homer in eighth lifts Cubs past Giants (AP)

San Francisco Giants' Keiichi Yabu, from Japan, pitches to the Chicago Cubs in the ninth inning of a baseball game in San Francisco, Wednesday, July 2, 2008. The Cubs won 6-5.

Mike Fontenot has suddenly become a powerful presence in the Chicago Cubs' lineup. Fontenot homered for the third time in eight games, including a tiebreaking shot in the eighth inning to lift the Cubs to a 6-5 win over the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday night. "I've been feeling good at the plate," said the second baseman, who had seven homers in 354 at-bats entering the game.

Former Notre Dame WR Samardzija moves to Triple-A (AP)

Iowa Cubs pitcher Jeff Samardzija speaks to a reporter before his team's game against the Omaha Royals, Tuesday, July 1, 2008, in Des Moines, Iowa. Samardzija, who played wide receiver for Notre Dame, signed with the Chicago Cubs despite speculation that he could have been a first-round pick in the NFL Draft.

Shortly after his promotion to Triple-A, the Iowa Cubs pulled a fast one on pitcher Jeff Samardzija. The I-Cubs hung a makeshift No. 83 jersey in Samardzija's locker, hazing the new guy the only way they knew how. Though Samardzija had long traded in the navy and gold of Notre Dame football for blue pinstripes, even he had to laugh.

Cain's gem lifts Giants past Cubs (AP)

San Francisco Giants' Fred Lewis celebrates with teammates after the Giants defeated the Chicago Cubs in a baseball game in San Francisco, Tuesday, July 1, 2008. The Giants won 2-1.

Matt Cain had been thinking a lot about this outing and how much he needed to bounce back with a great start. Then he went out and pitched one of his best games yet in 2008. Cain struck out 10 in eight shutout innings, third baseman Jose Castillo made a great diving stop in the eighth to save a hit and the San Francisco Giants beat the Chicago Cubs 2-1 on Tuesday night.

We don't grade on a curve, and that's why only the Rays get an A-plus while three teams are given Fs.

DeRosa, Lilly help get Cubs back on track (AP)

Chicago Cubs' Mark DeRosa, left, celebrates with Ronny Cedeno after the Cubs beat the San Francisco Giants 9-2 in a baseball game in San Francisco, Monday, June 30, 2008. DeRosa hit a grand slam and also a two-run homer to match his career high with six RBIs.

Mark DeRosa and Ted Lilly got the Chicago Cubs back on track -- DeRosa with two fine swings and Lilly with another impressive outing. DeRosa hit a grand slam and also a two-run homer to match his career high with six RBIs, Lilly pitched eight shutout innings and the Cubs ended a four-game skid with a 9-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Monday night.

Piniella rehashes first 2008 ejection (AP)
For the most part, Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella was lighthearted about his first ejection of 2008. Piniella was tossed in the second inning Sunday night at U.S. Cellular Field against the White Sox, who swept the weekend interleague series with the Cubs. Piniella, who did not address the media after the 5-1 loss, protested an appeal call by first base umpire Chad Fairchild.

Interleague action benefited the AL, Jim Edmonds benefited from Chicago, and home cooking benefited many.

Lackey, Angels beat Dodgers 1-0 (AP)
Get this: John Lackey managed to top his teammates, Jered Weaver and Jose Arredondo, a day after they didn't allow a hit against the Dodgers. How'd Lackey do it? He won. Lackey allowed just three hits in 8 2-3 innings to lead the Angels to a 1-0 win over the Dodgers on Sunday. The Angels lost by the same score on Saturday, even though Weaver and Arredondo held the Dodgers hitless for an unofficial,...

White Sox get even with Cubs (AP)

Chicago Cubs' Kosuke Fukudome, of Japan, walks off the field after striking out to end the seventh inning of a baseball game against the Chicago White Sox in Chicago, Sunday, June 29, 2008. The White Sox won 5-1.

A trip across town made all the difference for the White Sox. Swept by the Cubs a week ago at Wrigley Field, they were the ones doing the sweeping in their home park on the South Side of town. They finished off the three-victory run at U.S. Cellular Field on Sunday night, beating the Cubs 5-1 with homers from Carlos Quentin, Brian Anderson and Jim Thome backing solid pitching from Mark Buehrle.

Cubs manager Lou Piniella tossed in 2nd inning (AP)
Cubs manager Lou Piniella was ejected for the first time this season in the second inning Sunday night against the White Sox after protesting an appeal call from first base umpire Chad Fairchild. When the White Sox's Joe Crede had a check swing at a potential third strike, an appeal was made to Fairchild, who ruled no swing and a ball.

Quentin hits homer to give White Sox win (AP)

Chicago Cubs' Ronny Cedeno heads back to the dugout after striking out in the fourth inning of an interleague baseball game against the Chicago White Sox on Saturday, June 28, 2008, in Chicago. The White Sox won 6-5.

Manager Ozzie Guillen reversed the question as soon as it was asked. Where would the Chicago White Sox be without Carlos Quentin? "He's played great for us. He's gotten big hits and shown a lot of people out there," Guillen said. "At the same time, where would Quentin be without us?" Maybe still trying to find his way with the Arizona Diamondbacks where he dealt with injuries and lost his starting...

Reliever Scott Eyre latest on DL for Cubs (AP)
Injuries continued to mount for the Chicago Cubs, who put reliever Scott Eyre on the 15-day disabled list Saturday because of a left groin strain. Pitcher Carlos Zambrano (shoulder) and outfielders Alfonso Soriano (broken hand) and Reed Johnson (back) are already on the DL. The starting lineup isn't all healthy, either; starting shortstop Ryan Theriot was out of the lineup against the White Sox for...

Swisher's grand slam lifts White Sox to 10-3 win (AP)

Chicago Bulls first round basketball draft pick Derrick Rose, a Chicago native, sits in the White Sox dugout before the start of a crosstown baseball game against the Cubs and White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago, Friday, June 27, 2008. Rose threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Nick Swisher's first look at Chicago's heated baseball rivalry came last weekend at Wrigley Field, where he enjoyed the frenetic atmosphere but not the results. Over on the South Side, the experience was much more satisfying. Swisher hit a grand slam to cap a seven-run third inning and the White Sox finally beat the Cubs 10-3 on Friday.

Huff's big day lifts Orioles to win at Wrigley (AP)

Baltimore Orioles Brian Roberts doubles during the third inning of their 11-4 win over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Thursday, June 26, 2008. Roberts kept his hitting streak alive at 13 games.

When Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella saw his interleague schedule, he was relieved. The Cubs were matched up against the American League East this season, but didn't draw the Yankees or the Red Sox. Turns out, he should've been worried about the Rays and the Orioles. Aubrey Huff had four hits and two RBIs, Jay Payton drove in three runs and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Cubs 11-4 Thursday to...

Soto, Edmonds pace Cubs (AP)

Chicago Cubs closer Kerry Wood, left, congratulates catcher Geovany Soto after defeating the Baltimore Orioles 7-4 in an interleague baseball game Wednesday, June 25, 2008, in Chicago.

With another outfielder injured, the Chicago Cubs got a lift from veteran Jim Edmonds and rookie Geovany Soto to beat the Baltimore Orioles, who had some physical problems of their own. Edmonds homered and walked three times and Soto had three RBIS and reached base four times as the Cubs overcame two homers by Jay Payton for a 7-4 victory Wednesday night.

Cubs scratch Fukudome because of calf tightness (AP)
The Chicago Cubs scratched right fielder Kosuke Fukudome from their lineup Wednesday night against the Baltimore Orioles because of tightness in his left calf. The team said it was a precautionary move. Earlier, the Orioles scratched scheduled starter Brian Burres because he was sick and gave Matt Albers the start in his place.
