Cardinals Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

The Cardinals got a glimpse of their future Wednesday when rookie reliever Jason Motte made his major league debut.

Motte, a former catcher, throws as high as 99 mph, and he whipped through four outs in the seventh and eighth innings at Arizona before turning the ball over to rookie reliever Chris Perez. The latter had a rare misstep, giving up a one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth, but those two are apt to be closing out a few more games this season and perhaps be in the same roles next year.

"(Motte) handled himself very well," manager Tony La Russa said.

Motte, 26, fanned 110 in just 66 2/3 innings at Class AAA Memphis this year. He said, "I try to go right at guys, whether up here or down there.

Diamondbacks defeat Cardinals 4-3 (AP)

Arizona Diamondbacks players swarm teammate Adam Dunn, second from right, at second base after Dunn hit a game winning RBI double to score Conor Jackson (34) during the ninth inning of a baseball game Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, in Phoenix. The Diamondbacks won 4-3.

With his slumping team down three runs in the sixth inning, Arizona manager Bob Melvin started making notes for a postgame pep talk. "It didn't look good early on," Melvin said. "As a matter of fact, I was drawing up a little speech for after the game." The Diamondbacks spared him the trouble, rallying for a 4-3 victory on Adam Dunn's winning double in the ninth.

Glaus hits 300th career homer (AP)
Troy Glaus hit his 300th career home run on Wednesday, connecting in the third inning of the St. Louis Cardinals' game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Glaus homered against Doug Davis with a man on, putting the Cardinals ahead 2-0. Glaus has 23 homers this year and is 24th among active players on the home run list.

Wainwright, home runs lead Cardinals over Arizona (AP)

Arizona Diamondbacks' Mark Reynolds walks back to the dugout after he was called out on strikes against the St. Louis Cardinals in the second inning of a baseball game, Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, in Phoenix. The Cardinals won 8-2.

Adam Wainwright refuses to count St. Louis out of the playoff race. If he hadn't missed 2 1/2 months of the season, his Cardinals might be a whole lot closer. Wainwright helped himself by doubling in two runs, and Troy Glaus hit one of St. Louis' three homers Tuesday night in an 8-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Cardinals' Mather out for season with broken hand (AP)
St. Louis will be without Joe Mather for the rest of the season because of a broken bone in his left hand. The 26-year-old outfielder was injured while swinging at a pitch in the Cardinals' 8-6 loss to Arizona on Monday. He will undergo surgery to repair the broken hamate bone, team officials said. Mather, recalled from Triple-A Memphis on July 21, hit a solo home run Monday before he was injured.

Johnson returns to bigs for first time since 2004 (AP)
Catcher Mark Johnson was among six players called up by the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday, putting him back in the big leagues after nearly a four-year absence. Johnson, who had his contract purchased from Triple-A Memphis, last played in the majors when he pinch-hit for the Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis on Oct.

Drew hits for cycle, D-backs beat Cardinals 8-6 (AP)

Arizona Diamondbacks' Stephen Drew runs the bases during the eighth inning of a baseball game Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, in Phoenix. Drew went 5-for-5 and hit for the cycle in the Diamondbacks' 8-6 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

In black magic marker, a scuffed baseball told the details of the biggest game of Stephen Drew's career. Five hits and a cycle -- the first in Chase Field history. The Arizona Diamondbacks needed every hit in an 8-6 comeback victory over St. Louis on Monday. "I'm kind of in shock right now," said Drew, who carried his keepsake baseball into the postgame interview room.

Wigginton powers Astros to 3-0 win over Cardinals (AP)

St. Louis Cardinals' Albert Pujols, left, watches the final outs in the ninth inning during a baseball game against the Houston Astros on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, in Houston. The Astros won 3-0.

Meet Carlos Lee Jr. No, not the actual son of injured slugger Carlos Lee, but the man who stepped in for the left fielder and supplied the power the Astros were sorely missing once Lee fractured his pinky on Aug. 10. That would be Ty Wigginton, who hit his 12th home run of August to help the Astros beat the St.

Wigginton, Pence homer to help Astros beat Cards (AP)

Houston Astros' Ty Wigginton tosses his bat after being hit by a pitch in the seventh inning against the St. Louis Cardinals in a baseball game Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008 in Houston. Houston won 8-5.

A three-run deficit doesn't scare a team that's playing its best baseball of the season. That's why the Houston Astros didn't panic when they got behind by three in the first inning. Ty Wigginton and Hunter Pence hit home runs during a six-run first inning and the Houston Astros held on for an 8-5 win over the St.

Berkman's game-ending homer gives Astros 3-2 win (AP)

Houston Astros' Lance Berkman, second from right, is congratulated by teammates after hitting his first career walk-off home run in the ninth inning of the Astros' 3-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in a baseball game Friday, Aug. 29, 2008, in Houston.

Lance Berkman was starting to wonder if he would ever hit a game-ending home run. He finally delivered on Friday night. The five-time All-Star hit a game-ending solo shot off former teammate Russ Springer to lift the Houston Astros to a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night. Berkman had 285 career homers before Friday's game, the most by any active player without one that ended a game.

St. Louis Cardinals' Ryan Ludwick hits an RBI double during the eighth inning of a baseball game against the Milwaukee Brewers, Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, in St. Louis. The Cardinals defeated the Brewers 5-3.

Spurred by the antics of an overly excited Milwaukee Brewers reliever, the St. Louis Cardinals jumped back into the wild-card scrum. Carlos Villanueva's arm-raising, in-your-face gesture after escaping a bases-loaded jam in the seventh woke up the Cardinals against a team that's handled them all year, leading to a four-run rally in the eighth inning of a 5-3 victory against the Brewers on Wednesday...

Finally, Ben Sheets had the upper hand against the St. Louis Cardinals. He picked a perfect time to best a team that has given him fits, beating them in a game with postseason implications. Pujols totals 8 hits, 8 RBIs in series for Cards (AP)

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols follows through on a single during the third inning of a baseball game against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008, in St. Louis. Pujols hit a two-run homer and briefly took the lead in the NL batting race over the Braves' Chipper Jones, before falling back by less than a percentage point. The Cardinals won 6-3.

After Albert Pujols homered and singled his first two at-bats, giving him eight hits and eight RBIs in 10 weekend chances, the Braves removed him from the equation. Not soon enough to keep the Cardinals' star from shaving Chipper Jones' once seemingly insurmountable lead for the batting title to mere percentage points, and helping St.

"Hopefully, the fans can sit back and watch us today because we're busting our butts," Jeff Francoeur said.

Wainwright, Cardinals romp to 18-3 win over Braves (AP)

St. Louis Cardinals' Joel Pineiro throws the last pitch in the ninth inning against the Atlanta Braves in a MLB baseball game, Friday, Aug. 22, 2008 in St. Louis. The Cardinals scored 18 runs on 26 hits to beat the Braves.

Adam Wainwright breezed through the Atlanta Braves' lineup like a pitcher in midseason form instead of a guy who had been out 2 1/2 months. An offense that racked up its most hits since the Gashouse Gang was in its prime made the return of their opening-day starter a complete success. "It wasn't fantastic, but it's something I can build on for sure, and I'm glad to be back out here, which is the...
